Building confident skills at your child's pace

Lessons and learning in more detail
Each student has a different learning style, personality and set of priorities.
So every time I get a new student, I always start with getting to know them and how they like to learn, what they need help with most and how they would like to structure their lessons.
Whether its on paper, a white board or a laptop, at your home, in a library or cafe, I can work flexibly to make sure your child is comfortable with their learning, giving them the best chance to suceed.
Student T
Year 6
Downham Market, Norfolk
Student T needed to build general confidence and skills in all topics of Key Stage 2, in preparation for transitioning from home-educating to full-time school.
Duration:
Weekly, 90 minutes, split over 2 different maths topics. No time preference.
Lesson style:
We went steadily through year 5 and 6 topics with a standard textbook. T chose to do a small amount of set homework to have extra practice during the week.
We went through the homework at the start of each lesson and then moved on to the topic work. It was a joy to see T steadily improve in confidence and ability.
Outcome:
When T reached high school she said all the hard work had been worth it and now feels very capable of keeping up with the content.
Student H
Year 9
Ely, Cambridgehsire
Student H has dyslexia and dyscalculia. She learns with an online international college but needed extra tuition in all maths topics in Key Stage 3.
Duration:
Weekly, 90 minutes, with a half-way tea break. Prefers mornings.
Lesson style:
H showed me her online platform, her worksheets, quizzes and assignments.
We have worked steadily through each topic using the worksheets. I make up extra examples to give her more practice until she feels confident. After answering the module quiz she tackles the final assignment by herself.
Outcome:
Before our lessons, H was achieving around 30% on her assignments. Now she is regularly achieving 70-80%, and her maths skills and confidence have improved enormously. We are continuing with Key Stage 3 topics, ready to start GCSE content next year.
Student E
GCSE
Outwell, Norfolk
Student E needed practice in topics at GCSE level, especially algebra and graphs, in preparation for exams next year.
Duration:
Weekly, 45 minutes. Prefers to avoid early mornings!
Lesson style:
We started with algebraic equations, building up complexity slowly, checking on confidence levels throughout. Now he has a method he is comfortable with, and can spot and correct any errors straight away without being phased.
I explained graphs and gradients to E by using real-life, practical examples related to E's interests. This really helped him understand maths more effectively.
Outcome:
It's so good to see E change from feeling down about his abilities to feeling happy and confident. Now he feels ready to try past exam papers.
